Navigating Lagos: The Untapped Potential of Waterways for Sustainable Commuting

While Lagos’ traffic woes are well-documented, the city is home to an often-overlooked transportation resource: its waterways. With an extensive network of rivers, lagoons, and coastal areas, Lagos has the potential to develop a highly effective water-based transport system that could significantly ease road congestion. However, despite the obvious opportunities, waterway transportation has long been underutilized. Now, the Lagos State Government is ramping up efforts to harness this potential, with plans for more sustainable water-based commuting options.

In recent years, there has been a noticeable push towards developing Lagos’ waterway infrastructure, and several water transportation projects are already making a positive impact. The Eko Atlantic City water taxi service, launched in 2023, has proven to be an innovative approach to commuting. The service connects key business districts like Victoria Island and Lekki to the Lagos mainland, offering an alternative to the often congested road routes. According to Vanguard News (November 25, 2024), the Lagos State Governor has stressed the importance of expanding the water transport network as part of his broader vision for sustainable mobility. “Waterways are part of our strategy to reduce pressure on the roads, reduce traffic congestion, and promote eco-friendly alternatives for commuters,” he said.

In addition, The Nation (January 18, 2025) reported that the Lagos State Waterways Authority (LASWA) is investing in the construction of more modern terminals and the procurement of safer, more efficient boats to encourage more people to use water transport. The authority is also working on improving safety regulations and scheduling systems to make waterway transport a more reliable and attractive option. By integrating water transport with other modes, such as buses and the upcoming rail system, Lagos is aiming to create a more seamless, efficient multi-modal transport network.

The environmental benefits of expanding water transport are also significant. Using waterways for commuting reduces the number of vehicles on the roads, lowering carbon emissions and helping to combat air pollution. The development of the waterways system also provides a greener and more enjoyable way to travel, with passengers benefiting from the scenic views of the city while avoiding the stresses of traffic.

Although challenges remain, including limited coverage and the need for more investment in safety and infrastructure, the expansion of water transport in Lagos represents a major opportunity for both the environment and the city’s economy. With strategic planning, waterway transportation could play a pivotal role in reshaping urban mobility in Lagos for years to come.
