With Lagos being one of the largest cities in Africa, the state's traffic congestion has reached critical levels. However, a potential solution lies in Lagos's abundant coastline and waterways, which are currently underutilized for transportation. As the city continues to grapple with gridlock, the Lagos State Government has been increasingly focusing on developing water transportation systems, including ferries and boats, to provide an alternative and efficient mode of travel for residents.
According to The Nation (November
2024), the Lagos State Government has already started several initiatives to
develop water transportation. This includes expanding ferry routes and
introducing high-speed boats to link the island to the mainland, cutting down
on the hours commuters spend stuck in traffic. In an interview with The Nation,
Lagos State’s Commissioner for Transportation, Dr. Fredrick Oladeinde,
emphasized the critical role that water transportation plays in the city’s
long-term plan for urban mobility. He stated that by 2026, Lagos intends to
increase its water transport capacity significantly, with a focus on making the
system more reliable, accessible, and safe.
A Daily Trust report (August 2024)
also highlighted the steps being taken to improve waterway infrastructure. The
Lagos State Waterways Authority (LASWA) is leading the charge in making water
transport a viable alternative, having worked on enhancing navigational safety,
establishing new terminals, and implementing ticketing systems that can be
accessed via mobile apps. By 2025, new modern vessels are expected to join the
fleet, and with further investments, the aim is to make water transport a
dependable option for daily commuters.
The development of this sector
holds great promise. Not only can water transport help reduce the number of
vehicles on the roads, easing congestion, but it also offers an environmentally
friendly solution to urban mobility challenges. Moreover, the expansion of the
waterway system is likely to boost tourism, create jobs, and improve access to
hard-to-reach areas in Lagos. While the project is still in its early stages,
there is optimism about the future of Lagos's waterways as a game-changer in
the city's transportation landscape.
