As one of the most populous cities in Africa, Lagos faces significant transportation challenges. Road congestion is a daily nightmare for millions of residents, and the need for alternative modes of transport has never been more pressing. One solution that is gaining increasing attention is the potential of Lagos’ waterways. The city, surrounded by lagoons, rivers, and creeks, has long overlooked its waterways as viable means of transport. However, recent developments suggest that water-based transportation could be the key to easing Lagos' traffic crisis.
Lagos boasts a vast network of inland waterways
that can be utilized for passenger and freight transport. The Lagos State
Government, under the leadership of Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu, has been
making significant efforts to develop water transport infrastructure, which
could become an essential part of the city’s multimodal transport system. With
strategic investments in modern boats, piers, and water transport terminals,
Lagos is positioning itself to become a model of sustainable urban mobility
in Africa.
A report from Vanguard Newspaper published
on October 22, 2023, highlighted the expansion of the Lagos Waterways Authority
(LWSA) and its efforts to improve water transport systems across the city. The
article pointed out the ongoing construction of new terminals at key locations
like Ikorodu, Mile 2, and Ajah, which will significantly increase the
accessibility and reliability of water transportation.
Moreover, The Cable newspaper reported on
December 5, 2023, that Lagos’ water transportation sector is receiving a major
boost from both public and private sector partnerships. This collaboration is
expected to revamp existing boat services, introduce faster, more efficient
vessels, and offer affordable ticket pricing. As a result, more commuters are
expected to take to the water, reducing pressure on road transport systems and
cutting down on traffic-related pollution.
In the coming years, with the introduction of
more modern and efficient water transport options, the waterways could become
one of the most effective modes of transportation for Lagosians. By promoting
water transport, Lagos not only addresses congestion and pollution but also
unlocks the potential for a more sustainable and innovative transportation
network.
The next step will involve integrating water
transport with other modes of public transport, such as the rail and bus
networks, to create a seamless experience for commuters. If successful, Lagos’
waterways could become a global benchmark for sustainable urban mobility.
